Superior Dental Care alerts members of data breach

Dental insurance carrier Superior Dental Care began alerting members March 26 of a security breach that may have allowed unauthorized access to their personal information.

Superior Dental Care became aware of suspicious activity within an employee's email account Jan. 23, and the dental insurer promptly began investigating the incident, according to a news release from the insurer.

On Feb. 11, the company said it determined the employee's email account was accessed by an unauthorized, unknown party. The email account was accessed between Dec. 21 and Jan. 23, when Superior Dental Care terminated the account, the company said.

Member names, addresses, Social Security numbers and payment and medical information related to dental services may have been affected, the insurer said.

Superior Dental Care is mailing letters to those who were affected.

"SDC takes this incident and the security of its members’ information very seriously. The company has updated processes to further strengthen its systems to protect its members’ personal information and will continue to work with third-party experts to help ensure the highest levels of security," the company said.
