A former office manager for a Little Rock, Ark.-based dentist was sentenced to 12 years in prison for stealing $218,000 from the dental practice between 2013 and 2018, according to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.
Angela Kay Henson, the 48-year-old former dental practice employee, pleaded guilty in April to her role in embezzling money from Donald Cobb, DDS, and Cobb Family Dentistry. She has since repaid Dr. Cobb $168,000, which was the money owed after insurance reimbursed the dentist.
Dr. Cobb discovered that Ms. Henson was stealing money in January 2018 when he hired an accountant in order to sell his practice. The dentist says that when Ms. Henson turned over the financial records of the practice it was clear she played a role in the practice's dramatic dip in profit, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reports.
Upon investigation, Dr. Cobb found there were unpaid bills, patients went unbilled, tax penalties were owed, and 46 pages of insurance claims had gone unfiled. Dr. Cobb's wife testified that Ms. Henson would steal cash payments while crediting patients' accounts.
