Texas Tech gets another $20M in funding for El Paso dental school

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso was granted another $20 million in state funding to develop its Woody L. Hunt dental school, according to the El Paso Times.

The state legislature originally set aside $8 million for the El Paso dental school. Texas Tech will use the $20 million to for facilities and equipment, noting that high startup costs for dental schools are among the reasons there are only 66 in the nation.

The dental school is on schedule to enroll its first class of 40 students in 2021. Future dental school classes will comprise 60 students. Texas Tech is still in the process to have the dental school accredited.

This will be Texas' fourth dental school. Texas Tech hopes that by opening a new dental school it will help alleviate the state's general dentist shortage. Data suggests that 75 percent of dental school graduates stay close to where they train, the El Paso Times reports. In El Paso, there is a 57 percent shortage of dentists, according to the university.
