Colorado dental clinic exposed patients to unsterile equipment: 3 things to know

Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Peak Vista Dental is alerting 27 patients that they may have been exposed to disease after equipment was improperly sterilized, according to local CBS affiliate KKTV.

Three things to know:

1. President and CEO of the dental clinic Pam McManus said patients' risk to exposure is minimal. On May 17, a dental assistant discovered that equipment was not being sterilized properly.

2. Upon discovery, Peak Vista Dental determined 27 patients may have been exposed to the unsterile equipment. The clinic has been unable to contact three of the 27 patients, Ms. McManus confirmed to KKTV.

3. Peak Vista Dental hired a third-party to review its sterilization standards and ensure an incident like this doesn't happen again. The dental clinic has been in contact with the state health department about the sterilization issue.
