Washington state dentist sentenced to home confinement for role in opioid scheme

A Spokane, Wash.-based dentist was sentenced July 22 to 15 months of home confinement and three years of probation for illegally prescribing opioids to a former patient, according to The Spokesman-Review.

James Stein-Sheridan Shelby, DDS, pleaded guilty earlier this year to manipulating pain-killer prescriptions and distributing drugs to a former patient.

From December 2015 to October 2017, Dr. Shelby wrote 221 prescriptions to the former patient, which totaled to 12,406 tablets of hydrocodone, according to the indictment. Dr. Shelby also wrote 63 prescriptions, which amounted to 5,252 tablets, for Tramadol.

Dr. Shelby is no longer authorized to prescribe controlled substances.
