Dentist to lead National Institute of Nursing Research

Dentist Lawrence Tabak, DDS, PhD, was appointed interim director of the National Institute of Nursing Research, and will take over for Ann Cashion, RN, PhD, beginning Oct. 1, Business Insider reports.

Dr. Tabak is the NINR's former principal deputy director. The NINR is the nation's largest federal nursing research institute and one of 27 National Institutes of Health organizations.

Nurses across the country have criticized the selection, claiming that the appointment of a dentist diminishes the nursing profession, according to Business Insider. "NIH has every intention of filling the director position of the National Institute of Nursing Research with a highly qualified leader in nursing research," a NIH representative told Business Insider. "Earlier this year, NIH conducted a nationwide search that unfortunately failed to identify a suitable person to fill this important role."
