3 groups petition FTC to investigate Maine dental board

Three national nonprofits have asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the Maine Board of Dental Practice for antitrust violations.

The groups claim the dental board refuses to enforce the state's fact sheet law. In the petition, the nonprofits allege some dentists who are using dental amalgam are withholding information from patients about the amalgam's mercury content.

Specifically, the Consumers for Dental Choice, Organic Consumers Association and Mercury Police Project claim that the dental board's and dentists' use of "silver fillings" instead of amalgam deceives patients.

In Maine, dentists who use amalgams must provide patients a state-approved fact sheet.
