2 Maryland dentists perform $200K worth of pro bono services after dentist surrenders license

Two Anne Arundel County, Md.-based dentists performed more than $200,000 worth of free dental procedures for five patients after their dentist had surrendered his license, according to the Capital Gazette.

Several patients were left with unfinished dental work after Severna Park, Md.-based dentist Neil Woods, DDS, surrendered his dental license Feb. 5, resulting in the closing of his practice. Dr. Woods' decision to voluntarily surrender his license followed accusations that he provided subpar services to patients who pre-paid for thousands of dollars of dental care.

Clifford Walzer, DMD, and Brian Valle, DDS, selected five patients to receive pro bono work because they either had no teeth or breaking implants. Dr. Walzer performed oral surgery on the patients and Dr. Valle made the teeth that screw into their implants, according to the Capital Gazette.

Tony Prestipino, the owner of Artifex Dental Lab, created the impressions of the teeth for dentures, and Zimmer Biomet Dental donated implants and other dental surgery components, the newspaper reported.

"We are removing all the shabby work he has done and starting completely over,” Dr. Walzer told the Capital Gazette. "Helping people is what we are here for. This is rewarding and makes us feel good."

Dr. Woods could not be reached for comment by the Capital Gazette.
