New York university program to address growing shortage of dental providers

The Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) has started a new program to address the growing shortage of dentists and dental assistants, something the pandemic is exacerbating, reports ABC affiliate WROC.

The U.S. may be facing a shortage of more than 4,000 general dentists in 2030, according to the estimates by the National Health Resources and Services Administration.

The Eastman Institute for Oral Health, a safety-net provider, has launched a one-year dental assistant training program that will provide paid training and job opportunities for students heading into the industry.

The institute's new training program starts Jan. 19. Leaders say they are looking to expand the program, with over 300 applicants for just 15 slots.
