ADA, University of Pennsylvania get $2M grant to study oral mucosa

The American Dental Association and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia received a $2,269,994 grant from the National Institutes of Health, the dental association said Aug. 24.

The two groups will use the grant to examine functions of the mucous membrane inside the mouths of people with periodontal disease and peri-implantitis.

Stella Alimperti, PhD, a project leader with the dental association's research institute, and Dana Graves, DDS, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania dental school, will serve as co-principal investigators of the study. Other researchers include Eun-Jin Lee, PhD, from the ADA's research institute, and members of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, an organization of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
