Massachusetts dental office manager pleads guilty to Medicare fraud scheme

Robin Cronin of Worcester, Mass., pleaded guilty Sept. 21 to participating in a scheme to defraud the state's Medicaid program, MassHealth.

Ms. Cronin, 58, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and one count of healthcare fraud.

In January 2020, Ms. Cronin; Anthony DiStefano III, DDS; and Scott Cale, DDS, were all indicted for their alleged roles in the scheme. According to the indictment, dental services completed from 2014-18 by Dr. DiStefano were billed to MassHealth using Dr. Cale's provider identification. Dr. Cale then allegedly paid Dr. DiStefano some of the money MassHealth sent him. Ms. Cronin, the office manager, knew about the arrangement and billed MassHealth for services knowing the claims were false.

Drs. DiStefano and Cale have pleaded not guilty and are considered innocent until proven guilty.

The charges of healthcare fraud and conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud carry a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a fine up to $250,000.
