Here’s what you need to know:
1. While a significant gender gap in the dental workforce remains present in Utah, the state has improved since 2012 when 2.5 percent of dentists were female.
2. Utah also trails the nation in the percentage of women enrolled in dental school:
• 20 percent students are female at the University of Utah School of Dentistry in Salt Lake City
3. To decrease the gender gap in dentistry, the University of Utah School of Dentistry is extending 40 percent of all acceptance offers to women in 2018.
4. The University of Utah’s dental school expects its graduating classes to be 28.6 percent female over the next four years.
5. The national number of students applying to dental school dropped 9 percent. However, in 2015, 48 percent of all dental graduates nationwide were female.
