Dentists warn against latest wave of TikTok do-it-yourself dental care

Dentists are warning against a new wave of TikTok videos showing people using do-it-yourself methods to solve dental issues to avoid visiting the dentist, the Miami Herald reported Jan. 2.

Some of the videos include making at-home veneers, removing braces with a spoon and filling gaps with dental filling.

Several oral health-related TikTok trends have come about in the last couple years, including closing tooth gaps with rubber bands, whitening teeth with abrasive sponges and using InstaMorph beads to create prosthetic teeth. The American Dental Association in June also spoke out against a viral drink recipe involving flavored sparkling water mixed with balsamic vinegar.

Many viewers are advocating for the DIY hacks because of the costs associated with dental visits. However, several TikTok users who used these hacks have also said they regret using the methods, including one woman who ended up visiting the dentist to treat pain after she tried to straighten her teeth with a nail filer.
