Maine dental practice to close 1 office due to dentist shortage

A Maine dental practice is closing one of its three locations after being unable to fill a vacant dentist position for the office, Bangor Daily News reported April 14.

White Smiles Family Dentistry has locations in Fort Kent, Fort Fairfield and Presque Isle. Joseph White, DMD, said the practice exhausted its resources trying to find a dentist to provide care at the office.

The closure will make Fish River Rural Health in Fort Kent the only dental provider in the St. John Valley area, exacerbating a shortage of dentists and dental assistants in Aroostook County, the news organization said.

Fish River Rural Health has three full-time dentists and one part-time dentist. It is searching for another dental provider to serve the Fort Kent area.
