A dentist who led several organizations and pioneered oral AIDS research died March 31 at 85.
Dr. John Greenspan, PhD, was a professor emeritus of oral pathology at the University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry. He was also a past president of the American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research and the International Association for Dental Research.
Dr. Greenspan's work helped establish the field of oral HIV/AIDS research, the American Dental Association said in an April 26 news release. He and his wife, Dr. Deborah Greenspan, a recipient of the ADA’s Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research, identified hairy leukoplakia. Dr. Greenspan was awarded the ADA Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research in 2012.
