From building new facilities to recent research discoveries, here are six dental school updates that have taken place since May 30:
1. The Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College in Hawthorne will increase its enrollment and build a clinical facility in New Mexico to expand care.
2. Elliot Hersh, DMD, PhD, a professor in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department at the University of Pennsylvania dental medicine school in Philadelphia, retired after 35 years.
3. The University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., started construction last month on its integrated medical-dental center.
4. Researchers from the Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and the Chapel Hill-based University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry and Gillings School of Global Public Health discovered a bacterial species involved in tooth decay.
5. Boca Raton-based Florida Atlantic University is set to get $30 million from the state to fund its new dental school.
6. First-year dental program enrollment has increased by 2.4 percent since last year, according to data from the American Dental Association.
