8 dental fraud cases in 8 months

Here are eight cases involving fraud charges in the dental industry that Becker's has reported on so far this year: 

1. Scott Cale, DDS, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for engaging in a Medicaid fraud scheme.  

2. A former operator and two managers of a pediatric dental practice in Texas were charged for their roles in a $6 million Medicaid fraud and kickback scheme.

3. Brian Bui, DDS, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for COVID-19 relief fraud.

4. Jack Massarsky, DDS, was sentenced to two years in prison for embezzling more than $1.2 million from his employer and fraudulently obtaining government benefits in his employer’s name. 

5. Clarence Nabers, DDS, was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to commit healthcare fraud. 

6. Steven Price, DDS, and Heidi Moore, a dental hygienist, were charged with healthcare fraud, conspiracy and wire fraud charges. 

7. Five employees of a Hialeah, Fla.-based DSO were arrested on charges of using a formerly employed dentist's credentials to defraud insurance companies out of more than $1.3 million.

8. Multiple dental practice owners and co-conspirators were charged in January for allegedly taking part in a multifaceted racketeering conspiracy through a multistate network of dental practices and businesses.
