Dentists in affiliated practice more likely to change practice setting

Fifty-one percent of new dentists who are part of an affiliated private practice plan to move to a different practice setting, while 93% of new dentists in unaffiliated private practices plan to stay, according to research from the American Dental Association's Health Policy Institute. 

The ADA surveyed dentists who graduated from dental school between 2013 and 2022, gauging if they are happy with their current practice setting or if they are looking to make a switch. 

Here is how new dentists in affiliated private practices and unaffiliated private practices responded:

Plan to stay in affiliated private practices: 51%

Plan to leave for a unaffiliated private practice: 39%

Plan to leave for a federally qualified health center: 3%

Plan to leave for additional public settings: 4%

Plan to leave for dental school: 2%

Plan to stay in unaffiliated private practices: 93%

Plan to leave for an affiliated private practice: 5%
