55% of dentists plan to retire within 10 years

More than 55 percent of dentists who participated in DentalPost’s 2023 Salary Survey are planning to retire within 10 years.

DentalPost conducted its survey between July and September 2022 and received participation from nearly 15,000 dental professionals. The survey addresses topics including compensation, job turnover and work environment. Read more about the methodology here.

Here is when dentists are planning to retire, according to DentalPost:

Note: Dentists older than 55 are overrepresented in this survey when compared with data from the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute.

More than 25 years: 11.75 percent

20 to 24 years: 10.75 percent

15 to 19 years: 11.5 percent

11 to 14 years: 10.75 percent

9 to 10 years: 12.25 percent

7 to 8 years: 8.75 percent

5 to 6 years: 13.25 percent

3 to 4 years: 10.25 percent

Fewer than three years: 10.75 percent
