6 dental school updates to know

Two dental schools that appointed new deans and four other dental school updates that have taken place in August:

1. A team at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M., and Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi is developing nanotechnology-based oral healthcare products, including a remote-controlled magnetic toothpaste and toothbrush.

2. The University at Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine recently partnered its Destination Dental School and Native American Pre-Dental Student Gateway programs to increase diversity in dentistry. 

3. Lily Garcia, DDS, is stepping down as dean of the University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine to join Texas A&M University College of Dentistry as its new dean. 

4. The Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine in Pomona, Calif., appointed Elizabeth Andrews, DDS, its new dean.

5. Kansas City (Mo.) University’s upcoming dental school was awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration.

6. The East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine awarded Michael Webb, DDS,  its Jasper L. Lewis Jr. Distinguished Professorship in Pediatric Dentistry.
