9 federal government, policy updates for dentists to know

Here are nine federal updates from the last 30 days dental leaders should know:

1. The American Dental Association advocated for reliance on peer-reviewed science after the White House linked autism and ADHD to Tylenol use during pregnancy.

2. Thirteen dental groups submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Education advocating for certain measures to be taken to protect student loan borrowers under a new proposal.

3. The ADA shared its concerns about proposals from the National Institutes of Health aimed at limiting the amount grantees can spend on publishing research.

4. The ADA submitted comments to the Justice Department advocating for greater scrutiny of state laws that hinder competition among dental insurers and providers and have adverse effects on interstate commerce.

5. Senators Bernie Sanders and Jeff Merkley introduced legislation to make medical, nursing and dental schools tuition free and to expand the healthcare workforce. 

6. The federal government shutdown is entering its third week as lawmakers on Tuesday again failed to pass a funding bill. 

7. President Donald Trump on Oct. 10 announced an agreement with AstraZeneca to lower drug prices in the U.S.

8. The Trump administration is reversing scores of CDC layoffs after many employees were mistakenly terminated Oct. 10 through a procedural error.

9. The federal government opted to not impose tariffs on generic pharmaceuticals manufactured overseas, and instead focus on brand-name drugs.
