Four dental organizations have requested more than $600 million in funding for oral health programs for fiscal year 2027, according to an April 8 news release from the American Dental Association.

Here are five things to know:

  1. The organizations requested $22.25 million for the CDC Division of Oral Health, $46 million for HRSA oral health training programs and $570 million for the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, among other funding levels from Congress for fiscal year 2027.
  2. The groups underscored the importance of the programs administered by the CDC’s oral health division and Health Resources and Services Administration’s oral health training programs.
  3. In addition to funding, the coalition urged Congress to reestablish dental senior leadership within HHS.
  4. About 34 million school hours and 92 million work hours are lost each year due to unplanned or emergency dental care, and nearly $46 billion is lost due to untreated oral disease, according to the ADA.
  5. The ADA, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Education Association and the American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research sent a joint letter to House and Senate appropriations leaders.
