Dentist pay by the numbers

Here are five statistics on dentist pay industry leaders should know:

1. The average annual salary for a general dentist in the U.S. fell $13,670 from 2020 to 2021.

2. Idaho saw the largest decrease in annual dentist pay between 2020 and 2021, from $206,360 to $124,750.

3. New Mexico saw the largest increase in annual dentist salary from 2020 to 2021, from $166,910 to $189,430.

4. The average salary for dentists is $162,880 in the West and $328,553 in the Northeast, two regions that include eight of the 10 highest-paying cities for dentists.

5. The average hourly rate for general dentists is $80.37.
