A Florida woman recently pleaded no contest to orchestrating a $11 million dental insurance fraud scheme, WPBF reported Jan. 6.

Evelyn Cruz, 43, was accused last year of opening dental practices in Florida despite not having a license, instead using the names of licensed dentists without their knowledge. She was also accused of submitting claims to insurance companies for services she was not legally qualified to provide, allegedly collecting more than $11 million in payments.

Ms. Cruz pleaded no contest Jan. 6 to grand theft and proprietorship by non-dentists. She was sentenced to 28 days in county jail, credited with time served, 48 months of probation and court costs.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Future of Dentistry Roundtable, taking place September 14-15 in Chicago, dental leaders and executives will gain insights into emerging technologies, practice growth strategies and the evolving landscape of dental care delivery, with a focus on innovation, patient experience and operational excellence.
