A former employee at a dental practice in Wellington, Fla., has been accused of deleting computer files and shredding practice documents, according to a May 27 report from CBS affiliate WPEC.
Illiana Sacerio worked at the front desk of It’s a Smile World Pediatric Dentistry. Deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened Jan. 19.
The files included patient consent forms, front office documents, tax forms, insurance files, marketing and website branding, patient communication software, dental software files, patient X-rays, voicemail system files, employee records, inventory lists and evaluation forms, according to the practice owner.
The destruction of documents disrupted the practice’s operations and patient care. A portion of the data is unable to be recovered, as it was overwritten by the server before the damage was discovered.
Surveillance footage showed Ms. Sacerio working alone at the front desk with access to two computers, according to WPEC.
The minimum cost of the damage is about $9,000, the practice owner estimated.
Ms. Sacerio has been charged with destroying computer intellectual property and criminal mischief causing more than $1,000 in damages, the report said.
