The Iowa Dental Board recently fined Robert Wolf, DDS, $10,000 and suspended his license temporarily in connection with the death of a patient, the Iowa Capital Dispatch reported June 11.
Joseph Daniels, who had a history of hypertension and hyperlipidemia and was a cigarette smoker, underwent a dental implant procedure Jan. 26 at Dental Studio of Iowa in Johnston. Mr. Daniels was evaluated and cleared for the procedure by his primary care physician before the procedure.
After the procedure was completed, a nurse anesthetist notified Dr. Wolf and Jonathan Karch, DDS, that Mr. Daniels was “not doing well.” Paramedics were dispatched to the practice with a report of an “unconscious person.” Mr. Daniels was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center, where he later died.
The Polk County Medical Examiner ruled the death natural, attributing it to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with cigarette smoking being a contributing factor.
The Iowa Dental Board charged Dr. Wolf in November 2025 with several violations related to Mr. Daniels’ treatment, including permitting an unlicensed person to practice dentistry; encouraging or assisting with the unauthorized practice of dentistry; practicing dentistry in a manner that is harmful or detrimental to the public; willful and gross neglect; failure to maintain a satisfactory standard of competency; and practicing beyond one’s training.
The board found that a Minnesota dentist whose license was temporarily suspended and who was not licensed to practice in Iowa provided hands-on care during the procedure and that the combination of local anesthetics administered to Mr. Daniels exceeded recommended dosage limits. The board did not find evidence to support the charges of Dr. Wolf practicing beyond his training, and willful or gross neglect.
In addition to a $10,000 fine, Dr. Wolf’s license was suspended for six months. In order for his license to be reinstated, Dr. Wolf must complete a board-approved remediation course on recordkeeping, ethics and local anesthetic administration.
