A dentist in Maryland was sentenced after pleading guilty to one count of distributing narcotics and one count of prescribing controlled, dangerous substances.

Andrew Fried, DMD, owned a solo dental practice in Nottingham, Md., and unlawfully distributed oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled substance, according to a Dec. 19 news release from the Office of the Attorney General of Maryland.

Court documents said that from April 2022 through May 2025, Dr. Fried prescribed oxycodone without a legitimate medical purpose to a former employee who worked at his practice as a dental assistant. Dr. Fried and the assistant allegedly split the oxycodone pills between themselves.

Dr. Fried was sentenced to 10 years, all suspended but one day, with three years of probation. In addition, he is barred from participating in federal healthcare programs, the release said.
