The funding will aid the research of how genetic diseases, such as Down syndrome, impact mitochondria, leading to defects in the formation of tooth enamel, according to an April 7 news release shared with Becker’s.

The research team is led by Rodrigo Lacruz, PhD, a professor of molecular pathobiology at the dental school.

The grant comes from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, a branch of the National Institutes of Health, and will be disbursed over five years, the release said.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Future of Dentistry Roundtable, taking place September 14-15 in Chicago, dental leaders and executives will gain insights into emerging technologies, practice growth strategies and the evolving landscape of dental care delivery, with a focus on innovation, patient experience and operational excellence.
