Laredo (Texas) Orthodontics has issued a public service announcement warning the dental industry about the dangers of at-home orthodontics, also known as “fashion braces.”

There is a growing trend of individuals without the proper education or credentials who are advertising orthodontic services, according to an Oct. 23 news release from Laredo Orthodontics.

“Fashion braces” are often installed without sterilization, diagnostic imaging or treatment planning, leading to risks such as severe infections, permanent tooth loss and long-term damage.

The PSA aims to improve education and awareness of the risks associated with at-home orthodontic care to protect individuals from being misled by social media marketing, the release said.
