As dental practices nationwide report staffing shortages and an increase in patient demand, some Tucson, Ariz.-based offices say it could take months for a new patient to be seen for a routine cleaning, CBS affiliate KOLD-TV reported Oct. 20.

The American Dental Association's new president and seven other dentists made the news last week:

Laila Hishaw, DDS, dismayed by the small number of Black dentists in the U.S., started a social media campaign three years ago that snowballed into the nationwide nonprofit Diversity in Dentistry Mentorship Program, reported Zenger News Oct. 10.

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso and the New Mexico Higher Education Department are partnering on educational opportunities for New Mexico residents, KTSM, an NBC affiliate, reported Oct. 17.
