SmileDirectClub responds to California’s complaint against head dentist

Nashville, Tenn.-based SmileDirectClub has called the complaint filed by California’s Dental Board against its chief clinical officer and company dentist, Jeffrey Sulitzer, DMD, “a retaliatory accusation.”

In the formal accusation filed Nov. 12, 2019, the dental board claims SmileDirectClub and Dr. Sulitzer violated California dental laws by performing unlicensed dentistry, misleading the public and not recording patient treatments.

Dr. Sulitzer has been licensed in California since 2003 and continues to be in good standing with the state licensing agencies, SmileDirectClub claims.

The organization says the complaint is “baseless” and alleges the accusation was filed in direct retaliation to SmileDirectClub’s own lawsuit filed Oct. 16 against the board, claiming it conspired to jeopardize the company’s business

SmileDirectClub said it holds its dentists to the same standards as every other dentist. The accusations against Dr. Sulitzer “will be proven false by whatever means necessary,” the company concludes.
