The Phil and Karen Hunke Special Care Clinic is the first academic setting in South Texas that will serve patients with intellectual, developmental, cognitive or physical disabilities, according to a Feb. 7 news release from the school.
The space has seven dental treatment rooms and will have the capability to serve up to 40 patients each day.
The school received a $2 million federal Health Resources and Services Administration grant; $2.3 million in support from the Oral Health Improvement Program of the Texas Department of State Health Services; and seed funding from local philanthropists, the Hunke family.
The clinic will accept Medicaid for qualified patients under the age of 21 and select dental insurances, the release said.
