Texas Gov. Greg Abbott recently signed a bill that expands restrictions on noncompetes to dentists and other healthcare professionals, The National Law Review reported June 20.

Five notes:

1. Senate Bill 1318 amends a section of the state’s Business and Commerce Code, which governs noncompete agreements for physicians.

2. The bill limits the duration and scope of a noncompete agreement to one year after employment and five miles from the provider’s primary practice site.

3. The bill also extends provisions of the code to dentists, physician assistants and nurses.

4. Additional amendments to the code under SB1318 include limits on noncompete buyouts.

5. The bill goes into effect Sept. 1.
