The issues to integrating electronic dental records

Medical and dental integration is becoming more of a priority throughout the two industries, but when it comes to electronic dental records, there are some nuances that are causing some trouble.

Collecting, using and sharing of real-world dental information has many logistical, technological, privacy and ethical problems, according to a June 10 news release from the American Dental Association.

In a letter to the FDA, ADA President Brett Kessler, DDS, and Interim Executive Director Elizabeth Shapiro, DDS, said that medical and dental practices often have different information technology and standards, leading to roadblocks for smooth integration.

The ADA suggested adding the national clinical data registry for oral health maintained by the organization to the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement’s research use case.

The adoption would make sure that dentistry is not left behind when it comes to efforts from the federal government to create seamless data exchange and interoperability, the release said.
