A judge has ruled that there is sufficient evidence for Mohammed Abdulkareem to stand trial for the February 2024 shooting at Smile Plus Dentistry in El Cajon, Calif., that killed a dentist and injured two other employees, CBS 8 reported June 24.
Mohammed Sabah Abdulkareem allegedly opened fire at Smile Plus Dentistry & Orthodontics in El Cajon, Calif., on Feb. 29, 2024. He was taken into custody later that night following a manhunt. Authorities said at the time of his arrest that Mr. Abdulkareem is believed to be a “disgruntled former patient.”
Benjamin Harouni, DDS, was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot injuries to the body.
Mr. Abdulkareem pleaded not guilty in March 2024 to one count of murder and two counts of premeditated attempted murder. He has been held without bail since his arrest.
Mr. Abdulkareem chose to represent himself in court after being deemed competent to stand trial. He is scheduled to appear again July 7.
