Luis Omar Vargas was convicted last year of billing false claims, billing for work he performed as an unlicensed dentist and conspiring to pay kickbacks to patients.
The U.S. attorney in Manhattan said between 2012 and November 2017, Mr. Vargas persuaded patients to visit a specific dental practice in New York City. He would pay the patients $25 cash if they visited the clinic.
Mr. Vargas and his accomplices, licensed dentist Mehmet Dikengil, DDS, and Anna Jones, schemed to bill insurance companies for procedures that were never performed. Dr. Dikengil and Ms. Jones pleaded guilty for their roles in the scheme.
The judge ordered Mr. Vargas to pay nearly $1 million in restitution and serve two years of supervised release in addition to his prison sentence.
