Which states are losing the most dentists?

Massachusetts has the lowest net migration rate for dentists of all experience levels, according to data from the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute.

The data looked at the number of professionally active U.S. dentists in 2019 and 2022, comparing the number who left and entered the state. 

Here are the states that had a negative net migration with the percentage decrease from the 2019 dentist count:

Massachusetts: 3.8 percent

New Mexico: 3.5 percent

Louisiana: 3.1 percent

Pennsylvania: 3 percent

Kentucky: 2.9 percent

New York: 2.9 percent

Ohio: 2.5 percent

Rhode Island: 2.3 percent

Missouri: 1.9 percent

Iowa: 1.7 percent

Vermont: 1.6 percent

Illinois: 1.5 percent

West Virginia: 1.3 percent

Mississippi: 1.3 percent

Wisconsin: 1.1 percent

Nebraska: 1 percent

District of Columbia: 0.9 percent

Indiana: 0.9 percent

Connecticut: 0.8 percent

Maine: 0.8 percent

Oregon: 0.7 percent

Wyoming: 0.7 percent

Nevada: 0.7 percent

Oklahoma: 0.5 percent

Michigan: 0.2 percent

California: 0.0 percent (net loss migration of 9 dentists)
