Why dentists’ economic confidence is building

Dentists’ confidence in their individual practices, the overall dental sector and the U.S. economy continues to rise, largely driven by the large demand for dental services, according to the American Dental Association’s “State of the U.S. Dental Economy” report for the second quarter of 2026.

The ADA recently released its “State of the U.S. economy” report for the second quarter of 2026. The report includes economic data for dental practices as well as information on consumer dental spending, staffing and various industry challenges.

According to the report, 60.6% of dentists reported being confident in their practices, 50.2% said they are confident in the dental sector and 39.7% said they are confident in the U.S. economy as a whole. The ADA noted that although economic confidence is trending upward, it is still lower than levels reported in late 2024. The report also shows that consumer confidence in the economy is down.

Here are the top reasons dentists reported for their confidence in the economy:

1. Dentistry is always needed: 39.6%

2. Strong demand/practice busyness: 22.6%

3. Positive economic outlook in general: 17%

4. Patient demand exceeds supply of dentists in the area: 8%

5. Patient awareness/value of oral health: 8%
