How AI can boost independent dentistry

Artificial intelligence has become a helpful tool for private practices facing compounding operational challenges, such as staffing shortage and rising costs.

Jeff Dorsey, a sales agent at Transworld Systems, a revenue solutions technology company, recently spoke with Becker’s about how AI is spurring growth for private practices.

Question: Is private practice still attainable for new dentists? Why or why not?

Jeff Dorsey: I do think dentists can still open and maintain private (independent) practices. I work with hundreds of dentists helping them with their accounts receivables, and the one thing that sets dentists apart from other healthcare professionals is that they are good at knowing both the front end and back end of their businesses. The biggest challenge I see is being able to keep staff, and the constant churn is a strain on the practice because of knowledge and training costs. However, as AI improves, I think practices will be able to automate more tasks and need less people to run a practice. This is going to reduce waste and unnecessary costs, help them be more efficient and see more patients, and improve bottom line profits. Also there are more and more companies that offer services that use AI to identify issues with insurance claims and allow staff not be tied down chasing insurance companies for payment on claims.

AI is also enhancing dentistry by acting as a supportive “helper” tool, rather than a replacement for clinicians. Key impacts include real-time, AI-powered image analysis for detecting cavities and decay, remote monitoring and increased precision in orthodontic and implant procedures.

So, yes, there is still a place for private practice dentists in the marketplace.
