The dual payoff of dental AI

New dental technologies, in particular AI, can help practices enhance the patient experience and improve trust if implemented correctly.

The use of AI to confirm X-ray diagnoses and show patients exactly what is going on in their mouths is already proving to be an effective tool for Sonalika Rungta, DMD, the founder and dentist at Thompson (Conn.) Smiles.

Dr. Rungta is also looking into some other use cases of AI at the practice, such as a 24-hour AI receptionist to catch any empty spots in the schedule and generate revenue outside of practice hours.

Dr. Rungta recently connected with Becker’s to talk about how Thompson Smiles is using AI and technology to boost efficiency.

Question: As technology continues to reshape the patient experience, how are you building and maintaining patient trust?

Dr. Sonalika Rungta: We use AI for x-ray diagnostics with Pearl AI, which helps us build trust with our patients and ensures consistency in our X-ray diagnoses. There is no doubt in our patients’ minds, and they are more likely to accept the treatment plan.

We are also exploring an AI 24-hour receptionist to better serve our patients. The AI receptionist will answer calls, fill the schedule and improve customer service. We will not lose revenue during the hours our office is closed.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Future of Dentistry Roundtable, taking place September 14-15 in Chicago, dental leaders and executives will gain insights into emerging technologies, practice growth strategies and the evolving landscape of dental care delivery, with a focus on innovation, patient experience and operational excellence.
