University of Utah opens $36M oral health sciences building — 6 things to know

The University of Utah School of Dentistry officially opened the Ray and Tye Noorda Oral Health Sciences Building last month, with the goal of becoming a top dental school in the country, according to Glen R. Hanson, DDS, PhD, professor of dentistry at University of Utah, quoted in a Desert News report.

Here are six things to know about the school and new facility:

1. The new building opened in April 2015, and will provide access to dental care for those in Utah who do not currently have access.

2. The building was financed with a $30 million donation and is fully paid for, which Dr. Hanson believes will allow the school to provide care other dentists can not, according to a Salt Lake Tribune article.

3. The building's ground floor has a clinic with 62 dental stations, including an oral surgery suite.

4. The dental school opened in 2013 and admitted 43 students in the first two classes.

5. The goal is to expand to 40 students in each class with a total of 160 for the four-year program.

6. In addition to classrooms, a dental clinic and labs, the complex houses lifelike mannequins for students to practice procedures such as root canals.
