Gum disease may lead to heart disease: 3 things to know

Alton Thomas, DDS, of North Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Dentistry is helping patients understand the connection between gum disease and heart disease, the WMBF News reports.

Here are three things to know:

1. Patients diagnosed with gum disease are almost twice as likely to have heart disease.

2. Dr. Thomas reported that patients with gum disease have a 25 percent greater chance of having a cardiovascular episode, whether stroke or heart attack.

3. Oral bacteria found in plaque formations, which lead to gum disease, are also found in the tissue walls of arteries and veins.
