More than half of consumers say dental insurance is not affordable

Fifty-eight percent of consumers believe that dental insurance is not affordable, and 75 percent of those without insurance feel it is too expensive, according to a study from Synchrony.

Researchers interviewed a combined 1,000 insured and uninsured Americans between the ages of 20 and 79.

Here are four more notes on the study:

  • Lifetime dental coverage for the average adult can cost $51,000 for a single individual and up to $95,000 for couple and family coverage. Dental implants, orthodontics and other complex issues can incur additional costs.
  • Due to the high cost of dental care, 92 percent of the respondents said they would consider holding off on getting general dental care, and 83 percent said the same about emergency dental care.
  • Only 26 percent of respondents reported saving for dental expenses, and those that do have an average of $648 saved.
  • More than half of the respondents said that they would hold off on receiving dental care if the out-of-pocket cost was up to $1,000.
