Illinois passes dental insurance bill: 3 notes

The Illinois legislature recently passed a bill that would ban dental insurers from denying coverage for procedures they’ve previously authorized.

Three notes:

1. Under HB4789, dental insurers would still be able to deny coverage in certain instances where the patient’s condition has changed, or when a patient’s benefit limit is reached or situations in which the treatment is no longer necessary.

2. The Illinois House of Representatives voted to approve the bill in April, while the Senate approved it in May. Gov. JB Pritzker signed off on the bill in August.

3. The bill goes into effect Jan. 1.
