The American Dental Association is urging Aetna to reverse a recent decision to stop issuing paper checks to out-of-network dentists, saying the change may conflict with payment choice statutes in several states.
The ADA said July 22 that it is collaborating with state dental associations on the issue and is encouraging affected dentists to review state regulations and contact Aetna and their state insurance commissioner.
The ADA said Aetna has not yet responded to its request.
“Aetna has reviewed all applicable laws and regulations and will ensure continued compliance,” a spokesperson for Aetna told Becker’s.
The move follows a separate ADA dispute with Delta Dental of California, which announced it would charge out-of-network dentists a $15 weekly fee to receive paper check payments. The ADA sent a letter July 8 to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners opposing that policy.
The ADA said some electronic payment alternatives carry hidden costs, adding that some dentists directed to third-party vendors have reported additional processing charges tied to bundled services.
