Florida Combined Life is dropping its policy that limits same-day scaling and root planning to two quadrants, according to a Nov. 12 news release from the American Dental Association.

Here are five things to know:

  1. Based on its current policy, the insurer would only cover two quadrants of periodontal care on the same day.
  2. A dentist submitted a claim for four quadrants of scaling and root planning using code D4341.
  3. Florida Combined Life only paid for two of the quadrants and denied payment for the other two based on the patient’s dental contract.
  4. Having all four quadrants scaled and planned on the same visit can be convenient, more comfortable and provide a faster return to health for a patient.
  5. Submitting four quads of scaling and root planning to Florida Combined Life will no longer result in two of the quadrants being automatically denied.
