The National Council of Insurance Legislators has approved amendments to change virtual credit card-related payments to dentists from an “opt-out” to “opt-in” system, according to a Dec. 3 news release from the American Dental Association.
Here are five things to know:
- With the changes, dental plans must receive permission from dentists before issuing any payment method that has associated fees, including virtual credit cards.
- Dentists must actively change their preferred payment method to swap to another option.
- Under the opt-out approach, dentists would have to go through a lengthy process each time they renewed their provider agreement with an insurer.
- Adopting the opt-in system provides dentists with greater transparency and allows providers to avoid unwanted fees, according to the ADA.
- The amendments were made to the 2020 Transparency in Dental Benefits Contracting Model Act.
