Advantage Dental Services recently agreed to pay $4.5 million to settle allegations that it improperly billed Oregon’s Medicaid program.
The dental plan allegedly billed Medicaid for phone calls to patients that were recorded as nutrition and oral hygiene counseling but that allegedly included no real dental advice and lacked patient consent, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said in an Oct. 2 news release.
The Oregon Attorney General’s office and Oregon Health Authority allege that from January 2020 through December 2025, Advantage Dental used the calls to hit performance and quality metrics in its Medicaid contracts, earning it annual incentive payments it would not have received without the improper claims.
Under the settlement, Advantage Dental will pay $2.25 million in restitution and $2.25 million in civil penalties.
