Jason Barrett, a state senator in West Virginia, is expected to introduce a bill that includes a dental loss ratio, according to a Jan. 19 report from WVVA.
Here are five things to know:
- The More for Your Smile bill is centered around a dental loss ratio of 85%.
- Under the bill, dental insurance companies in the state would be required to allocate at least 85% of premium dollars on patient care.
- Hallie Mason, executive director of the West Virginia Dental Association, said some insurers may spend up to 50% of premiums on administrative costs and profits.
- If the bill becomes law, West Virginia would become the third state to enact a dental loss ratio requirement, following Massachusetts and North Dakota.
- The state dental association launched its More for Your Smile campaign to implement a dental loss ratio in 2025.
