Distribution of patient insurance at private practices in 2020: ADA

Private insurance covered more than half of patients treated at dental practices in 2020, according to new data from the American Dental Association.

The data, published in December, shows the distribution of patient insurance at dental practices from 1990-2020. The data from 2020 is on trend with previous years.

General practitioners

Private insurance: 65.6 percent

Public insurance: 7.2 percent

Not covered: 27.2 percent

Specialists

Private insurance: 63.9 percent

Public insurance: 9.7 percent

Not covered: 26.4 percent

All dentists

Private insurance: 65.2 percent

Public insurance: 7.8 percent

Not covered: 27 percent
